The production of meat and eggs, when integrated with HORTIFRUTICULTURA production and use of alternative foods, can make the acquisition of animal protein for households with low purchasing power, with a significant reduction in food consumption.
Projects in development show that the activity is an alternative income and food security for beneficiaries. The Poultry Caipira is characterized by the use of the family labor force , providing the participation of women and children because it is an easily managed activity, the use of small areas of land, and great capacity for conversion of grain and other products of plant origin (fruits, vegetables, cassava, sorghum, maize, grass and other) in meat and eggs, source of animal protein to feed the family
Christian Feroel, our new social project director, has gone 'way out' by his own pousada and farm, owner of the well known Bistro Pousada (www.acari-rn.com.br/bistro.htm) in Acari, and is building a dorm on his farm to use as our Permaculture Uni-Center school for Rio Grande do Norte. This gives us a facilty that can accomodate up to 20 'trainees' as a time. We are spending up to US$ 5,000 to renovate the farm for use as a school. We have commitments from several international volunteers to help on the farm during the construction.

For worm culture In the fourth month after assembly, the earthworm nursey produces on a monthly basis, at least two pounds of worms with a length varying from one to nine inches. In the third month, it procides collection of thirty pounds of humus that is repeated in the following months, plus another thirty pounds collected after the fifth month. The worms and humus is to be used in our family agriculture projects. |
Plants To start many plants we need to buy 'mudas' or plants started in controlled conditions in a nursey. Some plants such as medicine plants can be started by obtaining plants in the wild, working with them in the nursey until they produce seeds, planting the seeds in the nursey, then transfering the young plants to the actual farm where they will be grown and harvested in quantity.

..... Actually the project was completely approved but the post office failed to deliver the papers. When I didn´t answer our project was subsituted by another. The bank said the project is a good one and we were advised to resubmit for consideration again this year.
